The Help stars Emma Stone as Skeeter, Viola Davis as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny-three very dissimilar, amazing women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely closeness around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at jeopardy. From their dubious alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to go beyond the lines that define them, and the understanding that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed-even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the shifting times. -

“The Help”. This movie raised a  concerned it was one of those “white girl to the rescue” stories, but it wasn’t. The book’s true heroine–and even Skeeter (the white girl in inquiry) declares it within the work of fiction–are the courageous women who told their stories despite uncertainties of job loss and lynching. With Viola Davis and Octavia Spencers as the movie’s leads, I have hope that the movie portrays the book that I interpret.
